One of my favorite toys is the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4. Not only is this car a performance monster, but
it is arguably one of the most technology-packed production cars ever. The 91-93 models came stock with
a twin-turbo charged, DOHC, 24 valve, 3.0-liter V6 that produces an incredible 100hp/liter for a total
of 300hp. The 94+ models increased the stock power to 320hp. In addtion to the impressive power plant,
the car has All-Wheel-Drive (AWD), All-Wheel-Steering (AWS), an Electronically-Controlled-Suspension (ECS),
an Active-Aero system, an Active-Exhaust system, an all wheel Antilock-Brake-System (ABS), and numerous
other options.
While the car is impressive enough in stock form, one of the most impressive things about it is the
substantial performance increases that are possible for minimal investments. For example, simply with
the addition of a boost controller and a performance intake (~$600), I took my 1992 VR4 up to ~400hp range!
My current plans are to futher modify my 1993 VR4 from it's current level (~400-450hp) into the 600-700hp
range. However, that's by no means the end of the modification line... one crazy member of the Team3S
mailing list is targeting 1000hp! The current record for the VR4 in the 1/4 mile is 10.810 seconds.
I purchased my first VR4 (the 92) back in 1994 and it served my well for 8 years. Later, I found the
93 with incredibly low miles (~18K) for a great price. Of course, I proceeded to modify it as well.
Recently, I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a 1995 VR4 Spyder (hardtop convertible) with
only 12.4K miles. As a result, I sold the 92 and thus now I'm back to owning two of these bad boys!
